HE the Minister of Education and Higher Education Saad bin Ibrahim al-Mahmoud has inaugurated the primary stage new premises of the Doha Academy in Mauritius.
The minister, also the secretary general of the Supreme Education Council, represented HH the Emir at the ceremony.
Present on the occasion were Qatar’s Ambassador to Mauritius Ali bin Abdulla Zaid al-Mahmoud, Mauritius Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ahmed Rashid Beebeejaun along with the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister Arvin Boolell, Education Minister Vasant Kumar Bunwaree and ICT Minister Mohamed Asraf Ally Dulull.
Speaking on the role of education, HE Saad al-Mahmoud said: “The State of Qatar through strengthening its relation with the friendly Republic of Mauritius assisted in the establishment of this great educational institution for the benefit of the Republic and to spread knowledge.”
Doha Academy chairperson Ihsan Hossenbaccus noted he was proud that the school was gaining momentum and thanked the Emir for his continuous help.
“HH the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani laid the foundation stone for the project in January 2002 and we started with 150 students in 2003, and today have 800 students coming from all over the Island,” Hossenbaccus said.
The Doha Academy Mauritius includes the Doha Secondary School, further split into a school for boys and for girls as well as a primary school.
The Academy launched a BA Honours Degree in Arabic in 2007 and an Honours Degree in Islamic Studies last year.
